Liberated Quilting and the AAQI

Free Pieced Rose.....

As a member of both the Liberated Quilting Webring and the the Yahoo Liberated Quilters, I've had to liberate myself from my non-joining of rings and cliques clause in my blogging contract ;) and whole heartedly embrace my shadow side and be a groupee. And it's actually been a lot of fun ;)

Today, the Yahoo group, under the ownership and moderating gifts of the ever-lovely, Clare, the Dordogne Quilter,  and her Texan sidekick, the free wheeling and multi-talented (but blogless) Nancie, we held our first liberated virtual retreat.

As one of the Yahoos, I woke up diligently at 4 a.m. to greet my 3, 4, 8, 10, and 12 hours ahead of me in time and space, co-horts, and began my own project of the day...a free-pieced rose.

As an Alaskan refugee to Oregon since my college days in the 70's, both my DH and I attended Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon as did our son. But both of our daughters attended the University of Oregon, Eugene.

When their annual Civil War football game took place last week, DH rooted for OSU and I, without watching or listening to the game at all, rooted for UO...just to be fair and liberal minded ;)

So, in honor of UO's win and their new chance to go to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California...I decided to free piece my liberated color versions of a gold and green rose and not only enter it in Clare's 'Liberated Mind Challenge (Clare's challenge theme for that, is to free- piece the word 'Mind' or make a flower) but to also make it within the 9"x12" regulated size for an Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative donation as a Priority: Alzheimer's Quilt .

Being perpetually sleep deprived and having very little peace of mind much less a free-pieced mind...the flower worked for me! And in honor of the future Rose Bowl...a rose in UO's school colors (see the little 'O' in the center ;) Go, Ducks!

In effect, I am participating in three challenges at once, the Yahoo Liberated Quilters, the Liberated Mind Challenge and creating another donation quilt for the AAQI.... with the work of one day, and one little quilt..now, I call that using my mind...no matter what shape it's currently in! And a rose by any other name is still a free-pieced flower!

All I have left to do...is add some fast sleeve triangles to the back, a new back to cover it all and get those border/pseudo bindings tacked down back inside of it all....and I can add it to my pile-up of little ducks in a row, all waiting for a little Olfa grid/ Rowenta iron action ;)

It looks great, you joiner, you. And a great way to meet lots of challenges all at once. I've been meaning to make a free pieced rose, one of these days...
